Does Cold Water Speed Up Your Metabolism?
Have you ever heard that cold water can speed up your metabolism?
A study by Boschmann in 2003, showed that cold water can increase our metabolic rate by 30%. It does sound impressive doesn’t it? The problem is that this 30% increase only translates to only a few calories. More specifically, according to this study the body burns 17,5 to raise the temperature of about 500 ml of water from 0 to 37 degrees Celsius. This is a very small energy expenditure that is equal to the calorie content of 1/4 of an apple.
What is more, when another research team attempted to verify the findings of Boschmann three years later, they found an even smaller effect. The increase was only 4.5% in metabolic rate, which is very far from the 30% that was previously found. This effect translates to only 2,7 kcal per hour. This means that you will have to drink 2 liters of cold water to burn about 11 kcal. In short, cold water has a negligible contribution to weight loss and doesn’t actually speed up the metabolism in any meaningful way.
